CHALLENGE

To be more responsive to new business requirements and objectives, the client wanted to explore the use and benefits of cloud technologies and evaluate their best option to migrate some of their workloads to the cloud. They were looking for a solution that would be fast to deploy, easy to maintain, and that would provide the best turnaround time for provisioning their SQL infrastructure.

The client tasked Softlanding to do a Proof of Concept (PoC) to see if Microsoft’s Azure-based SQL managed instance would meet their requirements and expectations as it was the most compatible solution to their on-premises installation.

SOLUTION

Softlanding started with a consolidation assessment to ensure that SQL managed instance would meet the client’s expectations regarding time to deploy and ease of maintenance and provisioning as well as compare it to other offerings within Azure.

Then, the Softlanding team did an SQL PaaS Proof of Concept (PoC) that involved the following:

  • Provision and configure Azure PaaS SQL Managed Instance
  • Migrate databases to the Managed Instance
  • Configure connectivity with app services

After the PoC was completed, Sofltanding’s experts delivered training sessions to the client’s Database Admistrators to show them how to deploy the PaaS solution using the Portal and automated scripts and to show how familiar and easy the solution is to manage.

RESULTS

Faster Turnaround Times

By utilizing provisioning templates in Azure, the client was able to rapidly deploy a fully functioning SQL Server with out the need to provision hardware, an operating system, SQL server and the corresponding security updates. This dramatically reduces the time and effort to get projects going and delivered on time.

Improved Efficiency

As the SQL Managed Instance management interface is similar to the on-premises SQL interface the knowledge gap from existing infrastructure to SQL Managed Instance was minimal, saving time on adoption of the new technology. Database Administrators were able to learn the platform quickly and the SQL instances could be migrated without requiring major code changes in comparison with other SQL PaaS solutions. Additionally, they realized the benefits of a PaaS cloud solution in that they did not have to manage and maintain the underlying infrastructure, which saved time and improved productivity.
