Cloudy with a Chance of Security Breaches: Staying One Step Ahead of Evolving Threats

Tuesday, December 5 | 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Microsoft Excellence Center | Suite #700 - 725 Granville St, Vancouver BC

Softlanding and Microsoft are proud to present three Security and Cloud focused seminars uncovering the many approaches, architectures, and technology to provide self-sustaining, end-to-end security protection. Understanding how to most effectively deploy security solutions and resources, Microsoft and Softlanding provide guidance to help organizations understand the best approach based on their unique requirements - whether on premises, in the cloud or in a hybrid cloud environment.

Session 1 | 10:00 AM  - 10:30 AM

New Technologies to Protect Endpoints

Chris Stelzer (Senior Infrastructure Consultant)

Today's security threat landscape has changed to be much more aggressive and tenacious. Attack motives have changed from simply taking systems offline to hold data or devices hostage until the owner pays the demanded ransom. Modern attacks increasingly focus on large-scale intellectual property theft, targeted system degradation and even the security of individuals.  For this reason, not only IT departments but boards need to be better informed on the gravity of cybersecurity breaches amongst five of the most common layers of access: Users, Devices, Data, Apps and Network. Evaluating the practices, processes, and architecture of these five layers is crucial in better-protecting endpoints.

This session will preview the new and well-adopted technologies to better protect your organization's devices. Softlanding's Chris Stelzer will review the Microsoft technologies that protect for:

  • Device Security: Discussing Defender Advanced Threat Protection and new Security Features available in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

Session 2 | 10:30 AM - 11:15 AM

Benefits of an Azure Datacenter Move and Evaluating Migration Approaches

Neil Harrison (Senior Cloud Strategy Architect) and Nick Gailloux  (Senior Cloud Infrastructure Consultant)

Are aging hardware and frequent failures within your current data center becoming an arduous task to maintain and upkeep? An Azure datacenter migration can provide you with highly available servers and storage, all without capital expenditures, installation and configuration costs, warranty and service decisions, and maintenance costs.

Within this session, we will discuss the key scenarios where you might begin to think about Azure as the first step on your cloud journey. Softlanding's Neil Harrison and Nick Gailloux  will discuss:

  • Discussion of key scenarios where you might want to begin thinking about Azure as the first steps of the cloud journey- as well as, how you would structure it like VM sizing.
  • Strategy, Inventory of on-premises infrastructure - differences between PaaS or SaaS/IaaS and where these fit
  • Azure Site Recovery demo and discussion of the various migration scenarios/approaches including VMWare vs Hyper-V and business continuity scenarios i.e cold vs hot standby

Session 3 | 11:15 AM  - 12:00 PM

'Fort Knox'-ing your Azure and Office365

Neil Harrison (Senior Cloud Strategy Architect) and Nick Gailloux  (Senior Cloud Infrastructure Consultant)

We're all heading in the direction of the cloud, however, the cloud presents new risks on top of the traditional risks known. Office 365 is the most widely adopted cloud service, opening up traditional applications for everywhere, anytime access. However, better all-around access comes at a price. Within this session, we will show you approaches and tools to mitigate your security risks and uncover vulnerabilities before they're exploited.

This session will focus on the solutions that protect Identities and IP within Azure and Office 365. Technologies include:

  • Identity Protection Approaches and Tools: Extended AD, Pass-through Authentication, MFA, Azure Privileged Identity Management, and Cloud Advanced Threat Protection
  • Proactive Monitoring Tools: Operations Management Suite to monitor identity threats
